After a rather long leave of absence (seemed long to me), I am back quilting with the Monday Quilter's group. Yeah!!! I have several projects in mind, now I just need to get cuttin'... The group has several quilts ready for delivery. Next Monday I will get pics and post them. Those ladies do great work!

Baby Liam's Quilt

This quilt is for my youngest grandchild, Liam. He is only 6 1/2 months old so I am doing good. Maybe I will have it quilted by the time he is a year old. LOL... Since I started working, I don't get a lot of quilting done. I have six quilt tops finished waiting to be quilted. Always something else to be done.

Spending the New Year holiday with my daughter Jamie who lives in Orlando. Went to Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue for New Year's Eve dinner and show and afterwards watched the Magic Kingdom fireworks show from the beach at Fort Wilderness. Awesome! Today we are watching the Bowl games, well my husband and daughter are. I am here for support - Florida get with it! Since I don't have my sewing machine with me, I am knitting dishcloths... :-) and planning for Saturday, Jan 8, when the Monday Quilters are going to meet just for me! Well not really just for me but since I went to work I don't get to participate in the Monday quilting so I asked that they plan a Saturday a month so I can attend.

I have also been spending the day visiting other quilting blogs... I love quilters! Now back to purusing quilt sites for new ideas.

Trying to Get it Together

In June I started working outside the home, the first time in 27 years... and I am still adjusting so I am thinking I need a little push to get back into quilting again. I have plenty of inspiration available from all the quilting blogs I read, books/magazines etc. but I miss my quilting buddies ---------------------->

I am hoping to get together with them soon so I can get back into the sew....ing of things. Does anyone have any tips how to get over the hump of being soooooo unmotivated after a day at work? Help!!!

Design Wall

This is what is on my design wall today.
I collaborated with my granddaughter, Kaity,
and this is what we came up with. All the squares
are from Monday Quilter's wonderful friend, Carol.
I love the design wall. It makes it so easy to move
the squares around. I've got the rows numbered
so I can take this down and sew and have Kaity help
me design another quilt from other squares that
Carol has sent. The printed squares are monopoly money and the monopoly game board. We separated the squares with the black to make them stand out and the green around the edge added the needed bold color.

Kaity has been working on a strip quilt she is making to donate. She is about half-way done. She works on it when she comes to visit. Trying to keep her consistent so she does not pick up any bad habits of having UFO's lying around. Lots and lots of encouragement is the key for an almost 10 year old.

Here is Cindy, another newcomer to our group and to quilting, putting together a "L-ove" quilt. Would you believe she finished this quilt top last week in just one sitting with the help of one of our seasoned quilters.

Beth was new to quilting when she first came to the group and now she has the bug. Here she is working on her string quilt, well actually she is working on two at the same time. Yes, I'd say she has the bug... but not seasoned yet because she will finish these before she starts a new one, unlike many of us!!!

How many UFO's do you have stashed waiting to be finished? Leave us a note... Maybe we can encourage you so they can move to the FINALLY FINISHED stack.

This awesome quilt was transformed in one Monday from several scrap log cabin squares that were donated to the cause. We are so appreciative of donations and the women in our group with an eye for color... You go girls!!!

This favorite of everyone in the group was lovingly named "Hydrangeas". I love the design - the unframed squares seem to pop off the quilt.

Getting with the Program

I am so excited! This is a picture of my sewing center that is set up in our family room. I have accomplished so much in the last week and a half!!! This all came about because one of the women in our Monday Quilter’s group graciously invited me to her home to see her orchid collection and get some tips on revitalizing my fast fading orchid plant. While there, I was given a tour of her quilting set-up, which was her sewing machine and ironing board in the den where she and her husband spend a lot of time together. It was quite the set up… she could spend time with her husband and quilt too. What a novel idea but it took me a while to embrace it. I finally decided to try out the set-up in our family room even though I didn’t have a separate living room that would be available for guests. I was able to come to grips with visitors seeing my “creativity at work” as the only people that come to our house are friends and family. Friends are so wonderful because you don’t have to pretend with them and family already knows all your “stuff”. Praise God! Now I am good to go. I will post pictures as I finish up some of the UFO's that have been accumulating.

I have added several new links to the Monday Quilter blog that you will want to check out. I am amazed with all there is out there about quilting and that these women have time to write about it too. It is heartwarming they way quilters invite you into their lives and it is inspirational to read what others are doing and see the pictures of their beautiful quilts. I discovered that the only limitations to quilting are those one imposes on themselves.

Friendship Star Quilt

Several of the Monday Quilters are working on the Friendship Star quilt design. This quilt was made by Starla. What a difference fabric and color make.

Another future quilter seed planted!

My granddaughter that was here for two weeks will be going home tomorrow. She finished ten 9" string quilt blocks during her visit. We debated whether to send her home with supplies to finish the rest of the blocks and decided no. She will do them when she comes back although she did take her finished blocks to show her dad and sister.

This is one of the "LOVE" quilts made by the Monday Quilters group. When it is turned the other way, you can see the "L" design. This is an easy design that we use in teaching newbies to quilt.

You can see the "L" design in this one better. As with all quilts, just changing the color combinations gives the quilt a whole different look.

We call this "My Favorite Things" and it is a favorite of the ladies too. It is fun to make and allows for personal creativity with fabric designs and color without a lot of work.

What a busy week! My daughter and 5 granddaughters came from out of town on Thursday so my daughter and I could put together an "Old Saint Nick" rag quilt we had cut out last December, which we did finish except for sewing around the outside and clipping all the seams. I left that for her to do once she got back home. One of the granddaughters is staying for a couple of weeks and I hope to get a lot of string quilt squares out of her. She is 11 and does a great job designing and sewing her creations for her and her sisters’ American Dolls.

On Saturday, we had our annual 4th of July celebration, which included lots of friends, food, fireworks, and fun. This is one of my favorite holidays as my husband is the host and chef for the day, well for the most part. I contribute the potato salad and the grandchildren make the decorations. This year’s celebration was a little different, as our youngest daughter is now living and working in Orlando and was not able to be here and another daughter and her family were home sick. On an up note, our longtime friends, Rick and Nila Chambers were here with their two children. Rick is recently back from a second tour of duty overseas so this was a special celebration. Nila is our favorite musician and she is the worship leader at her church so we were blessed with some awesome piano playing and harmonizing. Her daughter and son sing, and her son plays the piano and drums (self taught), and is a songwriter (runs in the family). We were so blessed.

Sunday was more sewing and resting some (fibromyalgia flare up).

On Monday I was off to Monday Quilters to drop off a big box of goodies that Cornfieldquilter has blessed our group with. The air was electric with excitement as the ladies handled each piece of fabric, imagining what they were going to do with it. It is as much a blessing for us to make and give the quilts, as it is for those who receive them.

Tuesday was spent doing all those mundane household chores I didn’t do while my daughter was here and grocery shopping... Since I had not done things on my usual schedule, (not even blog) there was an inordinate amount to do and do and do… but fortunately my granddaughter is here to help.

Wednesday was spent at the computer at my part time job I do for another daughter. That brings us to today. Someone is coming over to dig up some plants I want to get rid of and in the mean time I am going to be blogging and quilting. YEAH!!!!! The blogging is a new thing and I am just beside myself with all that is available out there. I have to be reminded that this too is a process and it will evolve with time into all that I envision. I have been reading blogs from the Stashbusters Group and wonder how they manage to quilt, blog, keep up with other bloggers, and manage life all at the same time. I guess that too will come with time. I did read on one ladie's blog that she only has a kitchen because it came with the house.

Truck'n Along

Saturday didn't happen quite as I planned but I did get in some sewing time and was able to finish the blocks I was working on. Later that evening, I went to the Hot Air Balloon Festival in Foley, AL.

My time at Monday Quilters was very productive this week. I completed the sashing to go inbetween the blocks I had finished Saturday. This is a biggie for me especially with the fibromyalgia flare up.

Of interesting note: Monday Quilters will be hosting a Folk Art Day to introduce people to the use of material as a medium for expressing their creative side while at the same time producing something practical and useful that will be treasured for many years to come.Each individual will be making a String Quilt square under the direction of our own Monday Quilters. All the squares will be put together and quilted by the Monday Quilters, and then given to one of the residents of the William F. Green State Veterans Home, in Bay Minnette, AL.More details to follow at a later date.
